The characters in this powerful book are so sensitively and precisely described that I feel like I know them. Their touching stories come alive with the most accurate sequence of COVID madness and the tumultuous ocean of confusion that it caused.

— L. Bek

The in-depth research used in this work of fiction boldly portrays the unsettling time of COVID. It is quite possibly the most meticulous summation that I have encountered in any reading. The stories dive headlong into the heated debates and frustrating beliefs in a way that leaves the reader pondering what happened in our world and why.

— D. Menenberg, Author

This writer has an amazing memory for personal, social, and historical detail and an unerring ear for vivid dialogue. This works reminds us to keep an open and hopeful heart, even when living through a nightmarish time that brings out the very worst in people.

— M. McDonald

A beautifully honest, courageous, and valuable story about the pandemic in our time. In some trilogies, the second book is merely a bridge from the first to the third books. Indeed, the second book goes even deeper into the currents of dark and light, integrity and deception, telling our very human stories of loss and courage, confusion and certainty. A truly worthy sequel!

— F. Thoman, Author

The dialogue is stunning — absolutely spot on! It’s believable, covertly informative, and engaging.

— S. Sharp

This work is so layered and full of depth. The author has a gift of selecting the vivid details to make history live, and has shown so many ways we suffer, and the richness and depth of both grief and wisdom.

— L. Nadal

About The Books

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic that began late in 2019, the author worked as a solo hairstylist in the front parlor of an old Victorian house in the Pacific Northwest.

Beauteous Maximus is a collection of intimate fictionalized stories that were inspired by hundreds of conversations the author had with his customers about what it was like to live through the unprecedented disaster that conquered every nation on Earth.

Written in vignettes that are woven through the backdrop of politics and popular culture of the time, this compilation is an honest depiction of the impacts of pandemic life as told through the experiences of a gay man. COVID ushered in a conscious awakening and a coming of age. It was a turning point in human evolution that brought about the powerful desire to heal and to find lasting solutions to hatred and bigotry that were never thought possible.

This work is a testament to humanity’s greatest strength — its ability to endure the fear of annihilation with Hope, Love, and the Wisdom of Truth. Beauteous Maximus is written in dedication to our future selves.

Themes in Beauteous Maximus

Hair salons are like the navel of the universe. People often reveal their deepest thoughts while a stylist is touching their head. The conversations that occur while someone is sitting in the styling chair represent a microcosm of what is happening simultaneously all around the globe. Our thoughts inform our worldview and our place in society. Our thoughts also define our closest relationships, both to the people we value as well as to the perspective that we identify as Truth. COVID made us decide who and what we believed in as our way of life was forced to change. The changes we endured were often controversial or uncomfortable, but they were also powerful motivators for growth. Talking about those changes in the middle of a haircut helped us to overcome the fears that separated us from each other. Truth is the road to healing those divides – it teaches us how to discern fact from fiction. The road to Truth paved its way right to the styling chair where conversations were limitless and enduring. They touched on every subject imaginable and helped to remind us about the important things we didn’t even know we’d forgotten.

Some of the many important themes covered in this work include: human rights and civil rights, racism and intolerance, cultural and racial diversity, identity in geopolitics and religion, threats to Democracy, partisan divides and civil unrest, climate change, nationalism, extremism and terrorism, culture wars, conspiracy theories, world history, the history of war, and the history of music and art. Talking about all of these things can help us to better understand our past so we can chart a better course for the future.

From the Prologue

“COVID” was a word that we heard every single day. There was no way to avoid it. It was the absolute star of the show with top billing in our culture, politics and our various faiths. It commanded our daily thoughts and conversations…
